Tis the School of Today that Stands by the Flag

My grandmother received this souvenir booklet from her teacher Lydia H. Bartsch in the spring of 1914. Ms. Bartsch taught in a one room schoolhouse in Gunkel Township in Cass County, North Dakota. She had eight students in her school. Three of those students were relatives of mine (my grandma, great uncle and great aunt).

Education is very important in my family. Through education we have been able to learn, explore and grow. Education has meant opportunities and challenges. This booklet from long ago reminds me what education means to this nation. For that I am grateful and I hope we do not forget “it is the power that leads to success for the individual and the republic and molds our future in the crucible of life.”
